Sharp Tips for Atomic Resolution Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
This project introduces a procedure of making a sharp tip for the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). A 3 cm long and .25 mm radius tungsten wire will be electrochemically etched to form a sharp tip. The terminating point of the tip should have the radius of a few atoms. With that sharpness, the tip can resolve information of conductive surfaces at an atomic level.
