Perceptions of Youth Sport Coaches on the Impact of the CoachSmart New Hampshire (CSNH) Coaching Education Program on Coaching Efficacy

Nowadays, as the popularity of youth sports has grown, so too has the need for qualified coaches. These qualified coaches are competent in the areas of positive youth development, sport-specific skill development, and improving overall athlete experience. In an effort to further educate and develop competent youth sport coaches, there has been coaching education programs designed for coaches to build their coaching competencies. A significant goal of these coaching education programs, and CoachSmart New Hampshire (CSNH) in particular, is to increase coaches' coaching efficacies, a coach's belief or confidence in their abilities to affect the learning and performance of their athletes.

The objective of this research is to identify and report the impact the coaching education program has on the change in coaching efficacy of coaches at the high school level based on perceptions of efficacy. There is an expectation that the coaches’ point of view of a coaching education program will serve to examine its degree of value. This research is essential to assess the value of coach education from the coach’s perspective, which only few reported studies have been able to investigate. 

The targeted sample consists of 26 high school sport coaches from two local public high schools in the New Hampshire region, with thirteen coach participants from each school. The method of data collection from both the control and experimental groups will rely on a demographic questionnaire as well as the Coaching Efficacy Scale which measures four types of efficacy subscales (game strategy, motivation, technique, and character building) as well as an overall efficacy score. It is hypothesized that coaches who complete the CSNH program will experience an increase in overall coaching efficacy.
