Update No. 3 from President Dean

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I have been thinking a lot about leadership lately. In my own leadership roles, and in my courses in leadership for business executives, I have consistently focused on three attributes: integrity, aspiration, and learning . Leaders must exhibit unquestioned integrity in order to deserve the support of their organization or community. They must also help their organization to dream bigger and become better, as few people are hired into leadership positions simply to maintain the status quo. Finally, leaders must continue to learn, and to facilitate the learning of the people around them. It is only through learning that organizations can improve their performance with integrity. You can expect me to lead by these values and I will be talking about them on a regular basis.

Speaking of learning, I would like to ask for your help. The week after Thanksgiving, you will receive an email from the UNH Survey Center seeking your input to help guide me as I strive to set strategic priorities for my tenure as UNH’s president. I hope you will find time to complete the survey. I promise it won’t take long, and your participation will ensure that I receive the broadest range of perspectives.

In the meantime, please accept my warmest wishes for Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy a restful break with your family and friends. It is my favorite holiday! And if you will permit me to mention one more opportunity for learning, I have been reading Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick. I will never think about those Pilgrims the same way again!

All the best,

Jim Dean
