Laura M. Nickerson manages the K12 Education and Social Work portfolio for UNH’s Professional Development and Training office and serves as a Project Director in the Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education. She is also a mentor for UNH’s recent TRRE graduates who spending their first few years of teaching in rural New Hampshire.
Previously, Nickerson served as Director of the STEM Teachers' Collaborative, a UNH interdisciplinary effort to coordinate and strengthen STEM education, with the primary goals of increasing K-12 teachers’ expertise in computing, engineering and technology and extending the impact of excellent STEM teachers to more students throughout the state.
With the exception of one year as a fellow at the Wright Center for Science Education at Tufts University, Laura spent seventeen years in public and private high school classrooms teaching science, engineering, and computer science and serving as department chair. Most recently she taught at Windham High School in Windham, NH prior to coming to work at UNH.
Laura has worked extensively with school districts on Next Generation Science Standards implementation and in vertically aligning their science curricula from kindergarten to high school electives. She regularly gives workshops on technology and computing in education to schools and works with elementary teachers on integrating STEM and computer science into their curricula.
