UNH Computer Store and Repair Services to Close

The UNH Computer Store and Computer Repair Services (CRS) will close its doors on December 7. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about the closure. 

 

About the UNH Computer Store 

 

Why is the store closing? 
Along with other retailers, the UNH Computer Store has been impacted by the increasing popularity of online shopping and high competition from other box stores. UNH IT has decided to restructure to a more sustainable model.  

 

Will the store continue to accept returns? 
The store will accept returns under its normal policy until November 16.   There are no returns on final sale items. 
 

Will the store continue to accept gift certificates? 
The store will accept gift cards under its normal policy until December 7.

How will I make purchases after December 7?
There will be a black out of purchases for institutional computers and peripherals from December 7, 2018 to early January  2019 as the new procurement portal will not be available until early January 2019.

Will there be a sale of remaining UNH Computer Store inventory? 
Yes. The UNH Computer Store will continue to sell current inventory until December 7. Selected inventory is expected to be sold at a discount; details on this liquidation sale are forthcoming.  

 

Can I still get educational discounts on computers? 
Yes, Apple offers educational pricing to current and newly accepted college students, as well as faculty and staff with valid proof of enrollment/employment. USNH is in the process of finalizing a contract for System-wide PC purchases. At a later date, UNH IT will provide links/information for personal purchases. 

 

Can I place a special order?
Yes. Special Orders for Computers not in Stock can be made up until November 9th to ensure receipt prior to store closing.

 

Can I still make personal purchases and have it distributed over several paychecks through the Payroll Deduction Program?
The last day for personal purchases using the payroll deducation program will be Friday, September 28.

 

Will faculty and staff continue to receive computers and other equipment through UNH IT? 
Yes. The ordering method for UNH institutional computer and technology equipment as well as institutional software licenses will be updated to an online system. UNH IT will leverage online purchasing through USNH’s procurement system.  

 

 

Will UNH IT still provide/sell licenses for software? (e.g., Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud) 
Yes. UNH IT will continue to oversee the distribution/sale of institutional software licenses. 

 

Will the UNH Computer Store still accept trade-ins?
We are no longer accepting trade-ins.

 

Can we still use Business Service Credits?

The last day to make purchases made with Business Service Credits will be on September 28th.

  • Special Orders for Computers not in Stock can be made up until November 9th to ensure receipt prior to store closing.

 

Can you summarize the various dates things are occurring?

September 28:

  • last day to use payroll deduction for personal purchases
  • last day to order products through ShopUNH
  • last day to make purchases made with Business Service Credits

November 9: last day to place Special Orders for Computers not in Stock

November 16:  last day of returns to the store

December 7: store and computer repair is closing; last day to purchase institutional computers and use gift cards

December 10-January 2: black out of purchases for institutional computers and peripherals

EARLY January 2019: purchase institutional computers in new procurement portal

 

 

About Computer Repair Services 

 

Will UNH IT Computer Repair Services be closing or will its services change? 
Yes. UNH CRS, located next to the UNH Computer Store in the MUB and offices at 1 Leavitt Lane, will close. 

A new depot service will re-open in the space currently occupied by Computer Repair Services in the MUB. Hours are expected to be Monday – Friday from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. The UNH IT depot service will provide guidance on purchases and repairs and provide loaner computers for in-warranty systems.  

 

Will there be computer loaners available to students, faculty, and/or staff whose systems are being repaired? 
UNH IT will continue to offer a limited number of loaner computers to those who purchased from the UNH Computer Store whose machines are under warranty on a first-come, first-served basis. UNH IT will also provide loaner computers to those who purchase through the new online system.  

 

Will the OUT OF THE BOX service I purchased be honored? 
Yes. If you have purchased OUT OF THE BOX, we will honor those computers 

 

Will the SAFEWARE service I purchased be honored? 
Yes. SAFEWARE service will be coordinated through the UNH IT depot service.

 

Can you still repair my computer if I did not purchase OUT OF THE BOX, SAFEWARE or AppleCare?  

Under Warranty - We will perform software repairs (imaging) on computers purchased from the UNH Computer Store that are under warranty for a fee.

Out-of-Warranty - We will perform software repairs (imaging) on computers capable of running supported operating systems, purchased from the UNH Computer store that are out-of-warranty for a fee.  

Diagnostics - We will perform diagnostics on Windows systems on-site for a fee.  

Other repairs - The UNH IT depot will advise customers on available repair services and providers. Options are dependent on factors such as institutional vs personal purchases, warranty status, make/model, software vs hardware repair, and other considerations  

 

Does that mean repair services will be outsourced? 
Yes. Hardware services will be outsourced to the vendor if covered under warranty. Out-of-warranty services will be referred to approved vendors. 
 

 

 

Other Questions 

 

Will this change affect staff of the UNH Computer Store or Computer Repair Services? 
Yes. UNH is working to identify alternate employment opportunities for affected full-time and student staff.
