myCourses by Canvas operates on a three-week release cycle through which features are added or updated. Academic Technology Teaching and Learning Support blogs highlights from myCourses’ production release notes, a link to these notes, and other relevant content in the days surrounding a production release.

Recent Canvas updates involve some updates to current features and some bug fixes.  This blog post focuses on the updates for uploading images from the Rich Content Editor.

Rich Content Editor

Every one who has access to Canvas also has a Profile and a location for storing personal files outside of courses.  For students this can be a great way to keep files online and be able to access them from any location.  In the past, uploading files to this location could only be done from the Profile.  Recent changes to Canvas now allow you to upload files to the personal files area from inside a course.

This change can be useful when you want to add an image to your course, in the case of students it could be in a Discussion post.  For example, a student is asked to post an introduction with a photo.  Now using the “Add Image” menu option in the rich content editor you can select an image from a variety of sources, in addition the option to upload the file directly into your "MyFiles" personal files area.

Faculty also have the option to upload their files to either their personal files area or directly into the course files.  Faculty who share files from their personal files area maintain control over the editing properties of the files whereas files that are stored in the course can be edited by another co-instructor.
