by UNH IT Staff

At the beginning of FY18, UNH IT Telecom successfully transitioned the resident halls from a shared wired/wireless environment to a wireless-only environment. This transition allows the University to save approximately $1.5 million on cabling upgrades and equipment replacement.

The chart below shows the steady decline in wired port usage in the resident halls over the course of four years and helped UNH leadership make the decision to move to a wireless-only environment.

This chart shows the steady decline in wired port use since 2013.

As an additional benefit, we estimated removing the 130 Ethernet switches in the resident halls saved about 7600 kWh of electricity usage per month, lowering the University's carbon footprint.

This chart shows the electricity required to support wired ports.
