In response to increased email phishing, spoofing, and malware campaigns, UNH Information Technology will be enabling Recipient Verification on Wednesday, March 15. This feature reviews in-bound email claiming to be addressed to recipients at UNH, and verifies that the intended addressee exists in our email directory service. Think of it as a passport for email that verifies both sender and recipient to ensure safe delivery.
UNH IT has tested the Recipient Verification service for a year now in an audit mode, and all of the email filtered has been ‘junk’; we have yet to find a single legitimate email identified by this process. Of the 15 million messages UNH receives bi-weekly, only 30,000-50,000 fail recipient verification. Email systems that have been white-listed, or proven to be legitimate, will not be affected by this new service.
