Box for Office Online

New Features in Box at UNH Offer Real-time Co-Authoring of Documents Using Microsoft Office Tools

The introduction of Box at UNH in fall 2014 revolutionized the way people work here at the University. But one complaint was often overheard, whether it came from students, faculty, or staff: the inability to work on documents with others in real-time.

Enter Box for Office Online, a development which allows users to create new documents inside of Box without having to exit the web-based application. It also allows for real-time co-authoring and editing of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents with your colleagues.

Whether you’re creating a new Office document from scratch or editing an existing file, this new integration takes collaborating with Box to a new level. Collaborators can make edits alongside their colleagues and coworkers in real-time (each user’s name appears next to their edits), and all edits are automatically saved back to Box.  (In fact, the UNH IT Communications team has already started using Box for Office to write, edit, and collaborate on articles, including this one.)

The integration of Box with Microsoft Offline Online also means you don’t have to worry about version or operating system conflicts. Box users also don’t have to install any plugins or apps to get this new functionality; these features are built-in to Box.
