Microsoft Office 365 Professional Plus for Students, Faculty, and Staff FAQ

UNH IT has negotiated an agreement with Microsoft to provide all active UNH students, faculty, and staff with an Office 365 subscription.

What is Office 365 Professional Plus?

Office 365 Professional Plus is a subscription program through Microsoft that allows you to install the latest version of its popular productivity suite, Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs, on a PC, Mac, tablet, or smartphone.

What's the difference between Office 365 Professional Plus and Microsoft Office Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) licenses?

The Office 365 and Office EES licenses both give UNH staff access to the latest Microsoft Office software.  Students only have access through Office 365.  The EES license can be installed on any UNH-owned computer while Office 365 has limits on how many computers you can install it on.  Office 365 versions of Office tend to get updates more frequently and you are not able to opt out of the updates in most cases while the EES version you have the ability to not install updates and to also run older versions of Office.

So, which should I use?

If you are a student, the only option is Office 365.

If you are a faculty or staff member, UNH IT recommends that you use the Office EES license for any UNH-owned computers while you can use Office 365 for using Office on your own devices at home.  The Office 365 license is also required to use Office applications on mobile devices.

I already have the most current version of Office installed. What should I do?

Unless your department IT support staff advises otherwise, we recommend that you continue to use Microsoft Office as currently installed on your computer.  This benefit does not affect the functionality of Microsoft Office.  That said, feel free to try the Office apps on your mobile device, which is definitely a new feature.

If you need to reinstall Microsoft Office on a UNH-owned computer or install it on a new UNH-owned computer, please do so through the Office EES license channel.  Please click here for more information.

How many devices can I install it on?

You may install on up to 5 computers and 5 mobile devices.

Computers get the same full-fledged desktop version of Office that you’re used to.

For mobile devices, you may download the Microsoft Office apps available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.  While these apps are free for everyone, UNH’s agreement with Microsoft will allow you to use features normally reserved only for paying customers.

What if I need more installations?

It depends on the situation.  If you are planning on installing Microsoft Office in a cluster, lab, or other shared computer environment of UNH-owned computers, then use the EES license.

For other scenarios, you simply need to purchase additional licenses, which may or may not be considered an Office 365 installation depending on your circumstances. Please call the UNH Computer Store at (603) 862-1328 for more information.

What version of Microsoft Office do I get through this program?

One of the benefits of this program is that UNH students, faculty, and staff will be entitled to the latest version of Microsoft Office. As of this writing, this is Microsoft Office 2016 Professional for Windows users and Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac users.

When a new version is released, check with your departmental IT support staff or contact UNH IT for guidance on when, if, and how to upgrade.

As far as specific programs go:

  • Windows users get: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher, OneNote
  • Mac users get: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote

How long does the subscription last?

The subscription ends upon 30 days of separation from the university.

How does the subscription track whether or not I am still currently UNH-affiliated?

During the installation process, you will input your UNH credentials.  The application will check in with UNH servers every 30 days to ensure compliance.  This will be done in the background and generally should not interrupt your work.  Occasionally, you may be asked to input your credentials again, especially after long periods of not using the software.

Anything else I should know?

When saving files that you create or modify in Microsoft Office, be aware of your save location.  There are several choices, including a default save location of SharePoint in the cloud.  Most users likely want to save on the local computer, or you can download an add-on that will allow you to save directly to Box @ UNH.

Sounds great! How do I get it?

Students should go here:

Faculty and staff should go here:

Remember to download the add-on that will allow you to save directly to Box @ UNH afterward!
