Kaltura - Captioning a Video

Captioning is here!

Videos uploaded to Kaltura will now automatically be captioned! This process is handled by Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology and is 80% accurate. The remaining errors can be corrected by hand. This process is not immediate, and captions will take some time to appear. If you rip the video from a DVD or download from another location, captions may already be available.

The overall process of creating a captioned video consists of:

  1. Uploading to Kaltura
  2. Correcting captions:

The captioning workflow outlines a variety of starting points for video and the steps to get those videos captioned.

Uploading to Kaltura:

Once you have a video file, you can upload it to Kaltura. Automatic captioning will take place while the video is processing. Once the automated captioning is complete, your video will be captioned with around 80% accuracy.

Correcting Captions:

Automatic captions will not be 100% accurate. The remaining errors can be hand-corrected by the video owner or by any co-editors. There are two methods for correcting captions:

Using the built-in editing tool

  1. Locate the video you would like captioned in myCourses.
  2. Click the video's title or thumbnail.

    Click on video title
  3. Click on the Actions menu, then click Caption Requests.

  4. Locate the caption file you want to edit, then click its Edit button underneath "Status: Complete".
  5. Proceed to edit your captions. The video below explains how to use the built-in captioning tool.

For a more in-depth explanation, refer to Cielo24's video tutorial.

Editing captions manually

You can also edit your captions using a basic text editor. The video below explains the process.

You can also follow this process of downloading srt files to upload to additional copies of the same video. Download the edited SRT file, and upload it to each additional identical video*.

*Additional copies of videos are only made when using them with Kaltura's quiz tool. Otherwise, you you should be able to use the same video entry multiple times.
