Account Classification Overview

These account classifications are designed to meet the security principles supplied by IT Security.  If you still have questions please see the pages for each individual classification.

Primary Account

This is, by far, the most common account held by all faculty, staff, and students of UNH, GSC, USNH, and some KSC and PSU staff.  It is referred to as your UNH username and password or your UNH account.  Primary accounts are assigned to an individual who is actively affiliated with the University System of New Hampshire. The individual to whom the primary account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of that account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others.

Secondary Account

This is a second UNH account with a different username and password that is assigned to an individual who has a business need that requires multiple accounts with varying levels of access. The individual to whom the secondary account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of that account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others.

Pool Account

This IT Account is controlled by a UNH status employee, called the Guardian of the account, and is assigned to a specific person, called the user of the account, who is usually an hourly or temporary student employee, with an assigned expiration date.  Default expiration is set to the end of the fiscal year, unless otherwise noted, but no longer than one year. Over time, the account can rotate to several different persons but never more than one person at a time. Upon notification by the Guardian that the user of the account has left their position, IT Accounts Administrators will disable the account.  As directed by the Guardian, reassignment and activation of the account will occur again when a new user of the account needs to be assigned. The user of the pool account is responsible for the appropriate use of the account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others. The Guardian of the account will supervise the use of this account, insure that it is used in an appropriate manner and work with the IT Account Administrators to maintain the records related to the user of the pool account.

Sponsored Accounts

This is a Primary IT Account belonging to a non-affiliate of the University who has Sponsored User status. Sponsored User status is required for persons wanting to obtain access to UNH computing resources, but whose affiliation with UNH, GSC, or USNH requires additional authorization in order to grant that access.  This includes, but is not limited to, volunteers, contractors, visiting students and scholars, prior students/employees of the University, and student employees requesting access to the Administrative AD Domain or Outlook Exchange email. Sponsored User status requires yearly approval by a President, Vice President, Provost, Dean, or Designated Sponsor Representative (DSR).
