In spring 2019, UNH IT partnered with UNH Academic Technology to identify and implement a University System of New Hampshire (USNH)-wide Apple device management tool. This need arose after Apple led a significant technological shift in the method of deployment for macOS devices that made existing, traditional deployment and management methods used by most USNH institutions outdated.
Through a collaborative process with departmental staff at UNH, Plymouth State University, Keene State College, Granite State College, and USNH, Jamf Apple Management Framework was identified as the deployment solution, which will improve and standardize methods used to manage macOS devices. Jamf uses push technology to update OS, applications, and configuration items. It also reduces imminent security risks for institutions as Apple transitions to new technology and provides cost savings through volume device pricing and recovery of technical support staff time. Plymouth State University is currently using Jamf and provided guidance during the solution identification phase of this project.
The desired outcome for this project is to enable a standardized Apple Device deployment method – while maintaining individual campus tenancy and management – across the USNH technical ecosystem. This project aligns with a core mission of maintaining a secure, technical ecosystem and offers an opportunity for synergy USNH-wide to ensure a safe and standardized method for managing institutional Apple devices. The project timeline indicates a phased-in approach at UNH, and Jamf will be fully implemented in FY20.
