National Cyber Security Awareness Month

 

Each October, UNH recognizes National Cyber Security Awareness Month by offering events and resources about information protection and data security risks.  Resources offered include good practices, tools, and solutions to identify and protect sensitive information.

 

 

2016 EVENTS:

JOHN GRIMM, thales e-security

Mr. Grimm will lead a discussion regarding technical challenges and developments in the use of encryption to protect information including in cloud environments.  This session is intended for UNH IT personnel with responsibilities to protected information including Research Computing and Central IT.   Thales e-Security is a leading global provider of data protection solutions with more than 40 years experience securing the world’s most sensitive information and a UNH partner on the sc-net Project.

Timothy Russell and J.R.Manes, FBI

Agents Russell and Manes will discuss current malicious cyber trends and FBI and US Federal Government initiatives to combat those trends.  This session is open to USNH faculty, staff and students.

Cybersecurity month prize drawing

UNH CSM event attendees are eligible to register for a Grand Prize Drawing for an 11" MacBook Air.  The Grand Prize is co-sponsored by UNH ISS and Thales e-Security and will be presented by UNH CIO Stan Waddell and Thales UNH Representative, Patrick McLarney in November.

Patrick Woody, National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC)

Mr Woody, NCTC Terrorism Liason Officer, presented on terrorist use of the internet, terrorist doxing to inspire lone actor attacks in the West, challenges associated with terrorist transition from Web forums to social media, and encrypted communications. 

Jeremy Weader and Mark Turner, SOPHOS Safeguard

Mr Weader, SOPHOS Senior Sales Engineer, and Mr Turner, SOPHOS Channel Account Executive, discussed whole-disc and file-based encryption and UNH rollout plans.  SOPHOS has been selected as the UNH computer and data encryption solution provider.

Mobile Device Security Clinic

UNH students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to bring their mobile devices to weekly clinics to receive experienced guidance on settings and applications to protect privacy and personal information.

Michael Leking, Department of Homeland Security

Mr. Leking is one of four regionally deployed Department of Homeland Security Cyber Security Advisors (CSAs) and he discussed the programs roles and responsibilities as they relate to cyber security and infrastructure protection. CSAs convey current information on emerging cyber threats, federal initiatives and technology, and training opportunities, keeping communities informed and maintaining a working partnership across national, regional, and local programs in cyber security. Over the last two years, Mr. Leking has developed relationships with critical infrastructure owners and operators and state and local governments throughout the Northeast region. Mr Leking provided a narrative of his experiences, an overview of current malware and attacks, and DHS' cyber security assessments and other freely available resources.

Christopher Mulcahy, USNH Internal Audit

Mr. Mulcahy, USNH IT Audit Manager, presented a brief overview of data leakage cases which occurred at US institutions of higher education - including USNH- and discussed prevention and remediation strategies and tactics.
