In June 2012, Healthy UNH partnered with UNH's Dining Services to launch the Wildcat Plate, a UNH-specific portion plate, to be used in campus dining halls.
For years, the USDA has been recommending food choices and portion sizes through its food pyramid illustration, called My Pyramid. During summer 2011, the food pyramid illustration was changed to a plate illustration, called My Plate. My Plate is based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It is an easy, uncomplicated symbol to help remind people to think about their food choices in order to lead healthier lifestyles.
With permission, Healthy UNH and Dining Services adapted the My Plate design to develop a new product to guide patrons in making healthy food choices in UNH dining halls. Graduate level dietetic interns helped to develop helpful language so that in addition to teaching appropriate portion sizes, some guidance is given about how to choose healthy items for each portion. The image was reformatted to include UNH's changes, as well as to add information about beverage selections.
See healthy food choice and size demos by the nutrition and dietetic interns here.
The plates are 9" wide and made of high-quality melamine, which withstands the high temperatures of industrial dishwashers.
