 Important Facts About Tobacco Use

Tobacco use, like cigarette smoking, is currently the leading cause of death in the United States that is considered to be preventable.  In the U.S. the death rate is approximately 480,000 each year.

Tobacco use is associated with innumerable health risks, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and lung diseases.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that “smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and affects a person’s overall health.”

The good news is that the sooner an individual quits smoking, the sooner they can start reducing their risks for cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. Even your risk for getting lung cancer drops by half approximately 10 years after you quit.

Health Services at UNH offers education and counseling regarding tobacco use. There are even services provided from the University to support employees with tobacco use!

What are you waiting for? Work towards quitting starting today!
