UNH Eating Concerns Awareness Week 2018
What You Should Know About NEDA Week and UNH ECM
National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is February 26th, 2018 – March 4th, 2018. This event is hosted at UNH Monday February 26th – Friday March 2nd by the Eating Concerns Mentors (ECM). This is a week devoted to raising awareness of eating disorders at the University of New Hampshire.
According the NEDA, “Our culture has complicated relationships with food, exercise, and appearance. 30 million Americans will struggle with a full-blown eating disorder and millions more will battle food and body image issues that have untold negative impacts on their lives”. Especially on a college campus, it is difficult to not think about body image, when that is the society we live in. According to the Walden Center, 91% of female college students have attempted to control their weight through dieting or other means.
Throughout this week on the UNH campus, ECM peer educators will promote the following ideas:
- A person’s size does not determine health
- Limited representation of different body types in the media impacts body image of many individuals
- There is no such thing as good or bad food
- Dieting does not work
- Eating disorders are not about food
- Talking to someone about eating concerns can make a difference in their life
During this week, come out and support the Eating Concerns Mentors, as well as the students on this campus who have been affected by an eating disorder or disordered eating in their lifetime!
