Committing To Self-Care

I have always been an avid practitioner of yoga, but convinced myself that I never had time to do it every day. This past week however, I decided to advance my practice and commit to five days of yoga. Yoga has so many physical benefits, especially if it is done often (at least 3-4 times a week). From yoga alone, I have noticed improved muscle strength, flexibility, and posture.

I usually practice yoga in my apartment, but this week, I went to the morning Vinyasa yoga classes at the Hamel Recreation Center. Practicing with an instructor has the added benefit of a trained teacher who can offer advice on attaining better form when practicing yoga postures. I am a strong believer that yoga is the best way to start the day, and this week proved that. I immediately noticed the first day that the rest of the day was filled with a calm mind and inner peace. After continuing the next several days, this effect was heightened. Some of the most reported benefits of yoga are peace of mind, happiness and focus, all of which I noticed. I went through my days with less stress and a greater appreciation for everything around me, from my peers to my environment

If you are ever nervous about attending a class, don’t be! Yoga is one of the most welcoming activities you can do, and upon stepping on your mat, there is no judgment or comparison. UNH has yoga classes almost every day of the week for all levels and abilities. Or if you are more comfortable doing it alone, there are many free videos online to guide your practice. If it is your first time trying it out, check out the Beginner Yoga class on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 8:30 AM. The new year is all about setting intentions for yourself, so strive to go out of your comfort zone and try something new! Namaste
