Going to the gym at UNH can be an overwhelming and time consuming experience

There are many ways you can get necessary amounts of physical activity in the comfort of your own home (or dorm room) If you are someone who enjoys the lively aspects of the gym and using all the machines, then keep doing what you’re doing! But if you are someone who gets overwhelmed by the gym atmosphere, and you don’t want to put the time and effort into understanding each machine, working out alone in your room can be just as beneficial as going the gym.

There are many exercise that you can do with just your bodyweight, or you can invest in equipment to aid in your workout such as a mat, a kettlebell, a jumprope, a medicine ball, a resistance band, and even some dumbbells. ACE Fitness lists and describes 25 of the best exercises that can be done at home, and some examples include:

  • Push-ups
  • Bent Knee Sit-up/Crunches
  • Front and Side Planks
  • Squat Jumps
  • Forward Lunges
  • Calf Raises

All of theses exercises can be done without any equipment, or you can even add weights to some of these exercises to make them a little bit more challenging.

In addition to exercises like the ones listed above, trying yoga or meditation can greatly improve your physical and mental health. There are many websites such as The Yoga Journal that give great pictures, explanations, and videos of yoga for beginners.

Now you know that it is possible to stay physically active without the stresses of the gym. To read more about physical activity check out other Healthy UNH Blogs today!
