Have you heard of the famous saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"? It turns out there is most definitely truth to that statement. Luckily, there are a wide variety of apples to choose from and they are not only tasty and nutritious, but they are also affordable!

Here are five of the major health benefits of eating apples:

1. Dental Care

Eating an apple stimulates the secretion of saliva, reducing the growth of bacteria. Apples also contain fiber that cleanses teeth, therefore reducing the incidence of cavities.

2. Digestion

Apples aid in the digestion process due to their high levels of fiber. Fiber is an important element of proper digestion. Once the food is broken down, fiber binds to the food in your intestines, keeping the waste moving.

3. Treats Anemia

Anemia is a deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood, which can be treated by increasing iron intake. Iron plays an important role in the metabolism of red blood cells, and increasing the amount of red blood cells helps to prevent anemia.

4. Prevents Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease

Apples increase the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, which is linked to concentration, problem-solving, and memory. Apples also stop the gradual breakdown of dopamine-producing nerve cells, which can be an underlying cause of Parkinson’s.

5. Prevents Heart Disease

Apples contain phytochemicals that act as antioxidants against LDL (low-density lipoproteins), the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream. Apples are also rich in pectin, which is a fiber that lowers cholesterol levels. Reducing levels of cholesterol is crucial in preventing heart disease.
