Why Should You Consider The Mediterranean Diet?

Throughout the world, there are about 16 countries that border the Mediterranean Sea.  Each of these countries follows the Mediterranean diet in their own unique way.  The Mediterranean diet is a dietary pattern that follows high consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, plenty of fish, lean meat, and olive oil.  So how does this combination of food groups make this diet so beneficial? The people who follow this diet eat a lot less saturated fat than those who follow the average American diet.  More than half the calories from fat in the Mediterranean diet are from monounsaturated fats.  Monounsaturated Fats can help decrease bad cholesterol blood levels  and provide necessary nutrients to help maintain and develop our body’s cells.  Eating a diet that is plentiful in fruits and vegetables provides our body with antioxidants that can help to protect our body from the harmful free-radicals. 

Focusing on eating whole grains and nuts provides our bodies with protein and fiber- helping us to stay full for longer. 

What are the health benefits of following this healthy eating lifestyle? This heart-healthy diet can help prevent heart disease, lower your cholesterol, and lower the risk of a heart attack.  This way of eating is also beneficial for your brain by helping to prevent stroke, depression, and reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.  If you are looking for a way of eating that can help boost your energy levels, this diet may be the right choice for you!

Do you want to start eating the Mediterranean diet way? Start off slow by switching out little things from your diet each day and sure enough you will succeed!  Instead of having chips or pretzels, substitute your snacks with another crunchy foods like celery, carrots and broccoli.  Instead of having white rice and stir fry for dinner, have quinoa mixed with seasoned stir fried vegetables. Here in Italy, vegetables are really important in the Italian diet.  There local food markets focus on the freshest and best quality fruits and vegetables to be paired with their most delicious cuisines.  Buying fruits and vegetables from your local market can help influence you to make these important, but easy changes in your dietary lifestyle!
