Healthy Plates Around the Globe
Campus Wellness Promotion is Important For Healthy, Happy Students
While attending the University of Newcastle for a semester in Australia, I came across the University of Newcastle Healthy UoN plate. This plate gives guidance for a healthy meal very similarly to the Healthy UNH Wildcat Plates seen around UNH dining halls in Durham, NH. Half of the plate is designated for fruits and vegetables, one quarter is protein, and one quarter is grains. It is exciting to see similar advice and nutrition guidelines on the opposite side of the globe. This goes to show that nutritional recommendations are very similar at universities where ever you may live. The Healthy UoN department has similar goals to Healthy UNH, and as a Healthy UNH intern it has been interesting to see this likeminded approach.
On the Health UoN plate they recommend three servings of vegetables or salad, two servings of carbohydrates, and one serving of protein. Similar to the recommendations from Healthy UNH plates, they recommend a variety of colorful vegetables, lean meats for protein, and whole grains. Eating a balanced diet is important to universities around the world. At our Durham campus the Healthy UNH plate is a well known tool to students and staff that eat regularly at the dining halls.
