Do You Feel Tired All the Time? Are You Getting Enough Sleep at Night but Still Feel Fatigued?

There could be a possibility that your hectic schedule has caused you to lack some vital nutrients.  Iron Deficiency Anemia  could be the explanation of your excessive sleepiness. Iron is an essential mineral that is needed by our body’s to carry out many important functions. Not consuming foods that are rich in iron can cause your body to become iron deficient.  Anemia  occurs when our red bloods do not contain adequate hemoglobin.  The iron-rich protein known as hemoglobin is what carries oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our bodies.

The signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are feeling weak and tired, having decreased work performance, and decreased immune function. Iron deficiency can affect the functioning of many other organs systems such as delaying normal activity and motor function, delaying processing skills and normal thinking, causing fatigue that impairs the capability to do physical work, and may have an impact on memory.

What foods should you be consuming that contain iron?  A variety of whole grains, milk, fortified cereals, beans, nuts and seeds, and fruits and vegetables have good sources of iron.   Meat, fish, and poultry are the richest sources of iron and contain a specific type of iron call heme iron.  Heme iron from meat is absorbed more efficiently than iron from plants which is known as non-heme iron. Consuming sources of foods that contain heme iron can increase iron absorption for foods that contain non-heme iron.   Eating iron rich foods with Vitamin C sources can also enhance iron absorption.  Men from the ages 19-50 years old should be consuming 8 mg of iron per day while women should be consuming 18 mg of iron per day.

Balancing your school work and eating nutritious meals can be difficult at times.  But no matter how busy life can get, remembering to eat well is super important to maintain a good overall health!
