Need a new comfort food? Try an Australian meat pie.

If you’re looking for a fast Australian meal, go to a local food cart and ask for a meat pie. It is a classic Australian dish and was the first thing I ate when I landed in Sydney for my study abroad semester!

Like many cultures, this meal includes the key components of a protein, grain, and vegetable.

It fills you up fast and is an easy, on-the-go item.

You can order different ingredients for a meat pie but each has the same presentation. The base consists of a pie crust filled with marinated beef. On top of the pie portion are mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and gravy. The meal has an entire dinner plate stacked on top of each other, making it very hardy. The gravy added a salty touch to the plain peas and potatoes, and it was the perfect balance. 

Americans could easily whip this dish up and add some Australian cuisine into their diet. The closest American dish I could compare it to is a chicken pot pie, but it is definitely different and worth a try. A great comfort food if I do say so myself!
