Learn Why We Need More Nature In Our Lives

In order to reduce physical and mental health probelms, such as obesity and depression, we need more nature in our lives. Unfortunately, we only spend about 5% of our time outside. In urban areas with more trees, doctors prescribed fewer antidepressants, according to a London study. In Denmark, people living within 330 yards of green spaces were less likely to be obese and more likely to engage in exercise.

Our well-being can greatly improve by just simply going outside. Some of the benefits include:

  • Less likely to suffer from anxiety and depression
  • Lower cortisol rates, heart rates and blood pressure
  • Reduction of ADD and ADHD symptoms
  • Sleep improvement
  • Better immune system
  • Lower rates of stress related disorders
  • Increased vitamin D intake
  • Increased exercise
  • Increased intake of fresh air

If you are a student, staff or faculty member here at UNH, exploring the College Woods Trail is a great way to take advantage of the many health benefits nature has to offer! And for more information about Nature Therapy, read this article
