Tips on How to Practice Self Care

If you’re anything like me, you tend to have a lot on your plate, and find it difficult to take time for yourself. Besides, many people when they hear the term “self-care” think of taking the entire day to do nothing but lie in bed and do face masks and watch TV. Although there is nothing wrong with this, many people do not have time to do that.

There are many simple and easy ways to practice self-care. No matter how busy you are, it is important to always check in with yourself and make sure you are doing well both physically and mentally. Here are some simple ways you can practice self-care every day.

  • Start your morning right. Drinking water the second you wake up is great to ensure you will be ready for the day. We tend to get dehydrated in our sleep, so drinking water early on will prepare you for the rest of the day. Also, try to start your day with something you love, whether that’s drinking coffee or reading a book, try to start the day with positivity.
  • Journal. Journaling can be a really effective way to get your feelings on paper. You could do something as simple as writing down five goals for the day, or five things you enjoyed. Even if you have to write down the negativity you are feeling, journaling is a great outlet.
  • Take 5 Minutes. Whether you are at work, doing homework, or even in your room, try to take 5 minutes to just destress. Put away all work and electronics and take 5 minutes to just sit and check in with yourself and your needs.
  • Get outside. Going outside for even just a few minutes a day has proven to improve people's overall mood. Whether you are going for a walk or even just soaking in the sun, try to get outside for part of your day.
  • Express gratitude. One of the best ways to really ground yourself is to list all of the things you are grateful for in your life. Doing this will help you gain perspective, and hopefully leave you feeling better off than you did before.

Even though life can get crazy and your to-do list seems never ending, it is extremely important to take care of yourself. Incorporating these methods into your everyday life may help improve your mental health. These tips, along with many others, can be found on the Mental Health American site
