Turning Emotions Into Art

Are you feeling some stress and anxiety, but you're not into meditation? Try some art therapy! According to the American Art Therapy Association, “art therapy is a specialized area of mental health that uses art materials and the creative process to explore emotions, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem, and resolve other psychological conflicts.” There are many other benefits to art therapy as well. It can work to reduce some symptoms of depression, and increase our overall moods. There are also many art materials that can be used. Some people prefer working with clay or paint, while others prefer the simplicity of coloring. Whatever tools you choose to use, the benefits are endless.

I have only tried art therapy a few times on my own, but it was one of the best things I have ever done to reduce my stress. I grabbed my colored pencils and printed a mandala-style coloring page online, turned on some acoustic music, and got to coloring. Even though I only had time for 20 minutes, I felt my stress melting away and I had a burst of energy when I was finished. As the world is facing uncertain times, there are many simple things we can do to relieve some stress in a healthy way. Just grab something to color or paint with, and feel the stress leave as you turn your negative emotions into something beautiful!
