Don’t Panic!

The American Public Health Association’s National Public Health Week, taking place this April 7th- 13th, emphasizes the importance of ensuring that you, your family, and your community are equipped during emergencies and disasters. When in times of crisis or disaster, it is only humane for us to feel a sense of panic or fear when dealing with difficult situations. The best and most effective way to deal with unpredictable, non-preventable disasters and emergencies is to ensure that you and others around you are prepared if and when such events occur. 

Check out these tips to help prepare for emergencies or disasters and follow one of the National Public Health Week’s themes: DON’T PANIC 

  • Create a high quality emergency kit for your household/dorm/apartment and be sure to be informed about car safety and what should be included in your emergency car kit. 
  • Make a plan that suits your current living situation, as well as what you would do if you were at work, school, sporting events or when commuting to and from these places. 
  • Make sure you are familiar with and use disaster/emergency alerts that you can receive from the government via text or email on your mobile device, as well sign up for notifications on you college campus, such as the UNH Alert system 
  • Get involved and raise awareness about disaster preparedness and community/ national emergency preparedness with family members, friends and fellow students in your hometown and UNH community
