Job Description: Youth Education Assistant


Program: Youth Education – American River Ranch


Reports To: Education Director


Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Youth Education Assistant is to assist and teach sustainable agriculture and outdoor leadership sessions for youth ages pre-k to college, mostly elementary school aged youth. Their primary responsibilities also include setting up, facilitating, and evaluating 3-4 hour ‘Discovery’ field trips with guidance from Director and Coordinator, and assistance from volunteers and interns. The Assistant will create supporting educational documents and materials and co-develop individual session content, and logistical preparations. The Assistant will lead individual sessions, including lecture and hands-on exercises, as well as support logistics for other sessions taught by other staff educators. Furthermore, the position will collaborate in departmental short and long-term planning, attend weekly department operation meetings, as well as participate in the development of long-term systems for efficient and effective garden management (planting schedules, production goals, cultivation, irrigation, materials ordering,

etc.) Applications must be received by January 10th, 2014. Employment start date is scheduled for February 3, 2014.


Key Responsibilities

•             Teach sustainable agriculture training sessions for youth

•             Lead nutrition education activities utilizing produce from the garden

and farm

•             Co-create supporting educational documents and materials

•             Co-develop and deliver session content and logistical preparation

• Lead individual sessions, including lecture and hands-on exercises • Collaboration on departmental short and long-term planning

•             Development of long-term systems for efficient and effective farm


   (planting schedules, production goals, cultivation, irrigation, materials ordering, etc.) • Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly departmental meetings and supporting activities


Hours and Compensation

•             20 hours/week, including Saturdays with some evenings and weekends


•             Salary $16.82 per hour

•             It is our intention to make this position 30 hours/week by July 2014,

and full time by end of year 2014


Experience Required

•             Teaching skills, communication skills, time management, prioritizing


   delegating. Teaching credential or other credible teacher training preferred.

•             Leadership experience in a farm/garden using self-sustainability


•             Knowledge of irrigation systems, composting techniques, pest control,

weed control

•             A thorough understanding of organic gardening principles and practices

•             Experience working in a production garden or equivalent training

•             Working knowledge of plant families and varieties in organic

cultivation and optimal growing

    conditions, including vegetables, flowers, herbs, natives, and perennial crops

•             Demonstrated ability to navigate local nature trails with large groups

of people

   while effectively communicating natural history of the area

•             Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse

backgrounds in various situations

• Demonstrated ability to use Windows, Mac OS and Microsoft Office, Google calendars and file sharing

•             Co-coordinate volunteer and intern scheduling and crew supervision

•             Ability to work with kitchen staff in assuring that produce is

available and

    prepared for programs

•             Ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff,

community, and


•             Demonstrated ability to safely lead and participate in physically


    work on uneven terrain

•             Creatively think “on your feet’ and ‘out of the box’
