Acorn Hill Farm, a small organically managed dairy goat farm and micro- creamery seeks interns for the 2015 season. Three individuals are needed with one to start by 4/1/15 and two additional to start mid to late May.
Opportunity: To learn all aspects of raising dairy goats using organic methods including milking, health screenings, hoof care, nutrition, and parasite control. In addition interns will also learn proper milk handling and quality control along with pasteurization and cheesemaking in our licensed creamery.
We attend several regional farmers markets and work with two CSAs and a small wholesale distributor and interns learn to package and fill orders along with going to farmers markets to sell product. Field trips to other area farms give an opportunity to experience the diversity of the farming community here.
Requirements: We prefer applicants to have some farming and/or livestock experience but will consider those without farm experience who have food handling and production experience. Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs regularly and have a good sense of humor and be able to be flexible as the farm can make the best made schedule need to be adjusted. Good communication skills and a keen eye for detail a must.
Compensation: Housing is shared in one bedroom apartment within our house that includes utilities and wifi. Private bath and full kitchen included also.
Meals are prepared by interns with a share of milk, cheese, and yogurt available along with garden produce we grow in our garden. Other groceries are the responsibility of interns. Stipend discussed during interview process.
