Seeking Farmers, Bakers, and Kitchen magicians in Vermont
Earth Sky Time is an organic farm, commercial kitchen, wood fired bakery and fun-loving creative community in Southwestern Vermont. We grow 10 acres of certified organic vegetables, flowers, herbs, and orchard fruit, and have a farmstand, and a CSA. We also attend 4 local farmers markets where we sell our produce and bread as well as veggie burgers, hummus, and seasonal delicacies. Our products are delivered to restaurants, stores and co-ops throughout our region. We also collect compostables from local restaurants and schools to feed our 200 laying hens and provide renewable fertility for our fields.
Earth Sky Time is a dynamic farm business, bustling with projects, friends, music, good food, and our three young children. It is an exciting time to be a part of the local organic food movement and we welcome hard working folks to come live and learn with us as we feed our neighbors and ourselves. We also encourage folks to pursue their creative interests while they are here and our work schedules are deliberately flexible to that end.
On our farm you will find: lots of good people, one of the nicest bread ovens in the world, a wood fired sauna on the edge of a pond, miles of mountain trails, a pottery studio and a woodshop, a big sunny porch, roller skates, tractors and chain saws, a big barn for dancing, and a sprawling farm house full of industrial kitchen equipment, musical instruments and the smells of good cooking. The following positions receive a small monthly stipend, comfortable on farm accommodations and amazing bountiful vegetarian food. We still have openings. If it sounds good, let's talk.
Kitchen magician(s): Will manage our wood fired VT Goldburger (veggie burger) production and a wide range of seasonal value added prepared foods including pesto and our Hoomoos Za’atar (hummus). Part of our kitchen work will be to preserve the farm’s produce through canning, freezing and lactic-fermentation. Additionally, you will be integrally involved with our weekly Farm Nights where we prepare a gourmet, vegetarian farm to table feast along with great live music. You will be supervising a rotating kitchen crew in the production of large quantities of awesome food- both our own tried and true recipes your own creative endeavors.
Bakers: We have 2-3 intern positions year round in our wood fired bakery. You will be trained in all the steps of production of our amazing old-world breads. You will maintain starter cultures, mix and fold doughs, and help shape approximately 2000 loaves a week including baguettes, flatbreads, rolls, and croissants. Our process relies on extremely slow fermentation- retarding dough in bulk tubs and then again in wicker bannetons. We prepare starters at night for the next morning’s mix, loaves are shaped in the evening and baked early the following morning in our Llopis oven. This 36 hour process develops beautiful structure, flavor and keeping quality and allows us flexibility for the timing of our bakery work. We encourage 6 month bakery internships, during which time interns will go through mixing and shaping rotations and also have opportunities to develop oven skills.
Assistant farm manager: Will learn and utilize systems we use to grow our veggies and help supervise our crew of wwoofers/interns in all aspects of farm work. Good communication/people management skills are important for this position. Also important are problem solving skills and, most importantly, common sense. Familiarity with tractors/equipment is a plus but not a requirement. We expect you to take initiative and ask lots of questions. You will gain the skills necessary to be a productive leader and farmer. Skills you will develop include: seedling propagation work, soil blocking, high tunnel greenhouse management (tomatoes in the summer and cold hardy greens in the winter), mechanical transplanting, mulching, efficient cultivation and harvesting, tomato training, pest scouting. We are also hiring folks for field crew positions.
CSA/farmstand manager: Will coordinate harvest/set up two days a week for our CSA pick ups. We have had a CSA for the last 9 years and have many returning members. You'll become friends with quirky old ladies, groovy young families and a team of olympic skiers.
Farmer's marketer(s): Will attend weekly farmers markets starting in May. Good organizational skills, efficiency, aesthetic sensibility, and comfort with customers are important. We are a well established presence at the markets, and our veggies, wood fired breads and prepared foods are loved in our community. Feeding our neighbors is a deeply fulfilling aspect of our business. You will also be involved in farming and food production on non market days.
