Land’s Sake is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Farm Stand Manager to join our team for the 2013 season.
About the position:
The Stand Manager is responsible for the efficient and profitable management of the Farm Stand operations by increasing sales and minimizing labor and inventory costs for maximum profitability. Because the Land’s Sake farm stand also serves as an important point of contact with many people, this position is responsible for maintaining a positive image of Land’s Sake by using the farm stand to educate the public about the wide range of program offerings, as well as our history, mission, and values. For the person who is interested in a retail experience that is broader than simply sales, this is an exciting opportunity. This new position is full time and seasonal, beginning in May as a part-time position and becoming full-time in June through the end of the stand season at the end of October.
About Land’s Sake:
Land’s Sake is a community-based organization focused on connecting people to the land through farming, forestry, and education. We grow vegetables on 25 acres of town-owned land in the heart of Weston, Massachusetts; we manage a 250 acre woodlot using sustainable forestry practices for the town of Weston; and we offer year-round education programs for adults and children that strengthen their understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the land. Our farm team produces vegetable CSAs that serve over 250 families and over 9000 lbs. of food for donation to charity each year. Our education team welcomes over 1900 children per year for summer, afterschool, and field trip programs. We produce firewood, maple syrup, Christmas trees, and other forest products for sale in Weston and beyond.
Essential functions of this position include:
Staff management:
 Manage the staff and daily operations of the Land’s Sake farm stand.
 Provide orientation and training of all seasonal employees, including service and sales training, cash handling, and use of the Point of Sales (POS) system. Prepare and maintain training manuals and operation procedures as necessary.
 Prepare and revise work schedules as necessary to maintain staffing at the appropriate levels to
operate at peak efficiency without compromising customer service and to develop continuity and
depth in key positions.
 Work in coordination with the Farm Manager or Executive Director on all personnel actions, including
but not limited to interviewing, hiring, preparing pay rates and schedules, preparing performance
appraisals, and making recommendations for promotions, wage adjustments, demotions, disciplinary
actions, and discharge.
 Coordinate and schedule safety and first aid training of all Stand employees.
Stand Operations:
 Oversee the opening and closing of the Stand operations and ensure daily submittal of cash, check, and
credit receipts and sales information to the Executive Director in accordance with Land’s Sake internal
control procedures.
 Coordinate weekly with Farm Manager to project and prepare produce inventory for sales at the stand;
establish a process for regular communication to coordinate harvest and delivery.
 In coordination with the Farm Manager and the bookkeeper, manage Accounts Payable accounts with
distributors and coordinate purchases, shipments, and deliveries of items. Receive and record
inventory and manage inventory within approved budget.
 Expand stand offerings to feature local value-added artisanal foods and other local goods.
 Coordinate the cleaning and maintenance of farm stand buildings prior to opening and at the close of
the season.
 Create, revise, and document procedures and process for the effective and efficient operations of the
Budget and finance
 Provide accurate and timely data on sales, costs, inventory, and other related income and expense, and
cash flow information for the creation of annual and long-term budgets. Manage operations based on
 Insure the safe and secure handling of cash and sales receipts of the Stand Operations in accordance
with Land’s Sake procedures.
Marketing & Promotion
 Develop innovative, effective, and low-cost marketing approaches to increase overall sales, move
specific products, even out weather and day-of-week effects, and increase customer retention.
 Track, manage, and increase sales per customer, sales per hour, customers per day, and other relevant
measures of stand performance.
 Provide engaging, authoritative, and enthusiastic representation of the full range of Land’s Sake
programs, from farm and farm stand sales to education programs, events, and membership. Actively
promote and “sell” membership in Land’s Sake and participation in other Land’s Sake events.
 Maintain visible and effective marketing presence for Land’s Sake at the Stand.
 As needed, assist the Farm Manager and Executive Director in the short and long-term strategic
planning and implementation of the Stand operations as a viable and self-sustaining profit center.
 Attend Land’s Sake staff meetings and participate in the research and development of new markets, procedures, and processes to maximize efficiency and profitability of the Stand.
 Perform related duties that may not be specifically listed in the Position Description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 Strong communication skills including the ability to provide excellent customer service, tactfully address customer complaints; and train, manage, and motivate employees.
 Retail experience in farm stand or other context, including familiarity with inventory control and management, handling and merchandising fresh produce, point-of-sale equipment, and operations.
 Knowledge of overall farm and business operations and the ability to assess future farm stand needs.
 Knowledge and experience in effective marketing and public relations.
 Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
 Ability to use computer spreadsheets, word processing systems and electronic communications.
 Positive attitude, strong work ethic, absolute integrity, and environmental awareness required.
A Bachelor or Associate degree in management, marketing, public relations, education or related field required. A minimum of one year of previous work experience with fresh produce in a farm stand or similar retail operation is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted that provides the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors (office environment and at the Farm Stand). Limited travel regionally may be required for meetings or to pick up inventory. Candidate should have a clean driving record. Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
