Assume primary responsibility for management of UVM Catamount Education Farm (CEF), a 5-acre educational, organic, diversified vegetable farm. Develop and oversee a comprehensive, multi-year farm plan in support of: educational programming in Farmer Training Program (FTP) and Plant & Soil Sciences (PSS) undergraduate programs; Community Supported Agriculture, farm stand, and institutional produce sales; and research needs of faculty in collaboration with the HREC Director. The farm plan must be economically balanced and consider long-term soil improvement of lands used. This position plans and coordinates daily farm work and farm-based lessons for seasonal staff and students that are consistent with curricular goals. Serve as educator for the FTP program and provide field laboratory support for PSS courses.
Position involves significant manual farm work, including: lifting harvest boxes full of produce, large bags of seed/fertilizer, digging and operation of farm machinery. This position also will: manage weed and pest pressure with organic techniques including but not limited to flame weeding, mechanical cultivation, stale bedding, use of crop rotations and mulches; interpret soil test results and develop long-term fertility plan following Organic Certification guidelines.
Bachelor Degree in plant science or related field and three years of experience in vegetable farm management and education required. Effective analytical, communication, organizational and teaching skills required. This position includes significant multi-tasking as well as balancing the production needs of the farm with educational goals. Valid driver’s license required to operate farm vehicles. Ability to safely and efficiently operate farm equipment.
Experience teaching in a hands-on environment. Knowledge of operational budgets for farm systems.
