History: Since its founding in 1980, Land’s Sake has grown into a vital community resource for people of all ages and backgrounds. Our community-based organization operates a farm using sustainable, organic methods, and offers successful education and forestry programs. We accomplish our mission through an array of programs including a CSA and farmstand, afterschool and summer education, forestry and land stewardship programs, a hunger relief program, and year-round community building events.

Land’s Sake (LS) has been growing steadily and is at an exciting crossroads in its programmatic and infrastructure development. We are searching for an ED to skillfully lead the organization through short- and long-term planning and investment, in order for Land’s Sake to reach its full mission delivery potential.

 

LS seeks an entrepreneurial, energetic, and inspiring leader with a proven fundraising record as well as strong strategic, management, communication, and community and team building skills.

 

The Executive Director (ED) will drive the organization’s mission working collaboratively with lead staff members in Education, Farm and Forestry, Operations and Retail, and with the Board of Directors.

 

The ED, reporting directly to the Board of Directors, is responsible for fulfilling the organization’s mission through programs, and continually improving its strategic and financial performance.  She/he sets strategic direction, is accountable for Land’s Sake’s overall management and organizational sustainability, and has a special focus on managing and meeting LS’s education objectives.

 

The ED will be a public presence, a spokesperson, and a catalyst for creating new relationships that expand Land’s Sake’s opportunities and secure its financial sustainability.

 

Responsibilities

 

Strategic Planning:

 

Work in partnership with the Board and with lead staff members in Education, Farm and Forestry, Operations and Retail on creating short- and long-term approved strategic plans and ensure the flow of funds to achieve these plans.

The ED holds the primary responsibility for facilitating the strategic planning process.

Develop and maintain a close, first-hand understanding of all Farm, Farmstand, Forestry, and Education programs to maximize mission impact through strategic planning and community engagement.

Development

 

Responsible for creation and implementation of approved development plan Ensure adequate staffing and infrastructure to support and implement development plan Lead and direct donor cultivation activities Lead and direct grant writing efforts Ensure that the flow of funds permits LS to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its mission across programs, and that those funds are allocated properly to reflect present needs and future potential Formulate and execute development strategies that will ensure consistency throughout the organization and enhance revenue from major donors, foundations, government agencies, and corporations Provide logistical and strategic support for fundraising events Education Program

 

Direct education program to reach potential mission growth Collaborate with Education leadership and stakeholders on creation and implementation of short and long-term education plans Ensure adequate funding, staffing, and infrastructure to support education plans Community Relations/Outreach

 

Provide inspirational leadership to the LS community (Board, staff, members, stakeholders, and larger community); serve as the public face of LS Maintain and build organizational partnerships with town, schools, and similar organizations, both nonprofit or for profit Receive, manage and engage community members approaching the organization Monitor relevant town committees and organizations Facilitate coordination of Board, staff, and volunteers to deliver outreach events Organizational Responsibilities

 

Engage in a positive, collaborative work environment Lead staff in a collaborative manner allowing for autonomy, professional growth, and ownership of specific responsibilities associated with the roles Collaborate with LS Team in strengthening operational and administrative systems and infrastructure Financial

 

Responsible for overall financial plan of Land’s Sake with a special focus on Development, Education, and Events programs/budgets Board of Directors (BOD)

 

Support/advise BOD to identify and execute board development priorities Prepare and present reports as requested in addition to quarterly reports Ensure administrative BOD support, attend BOD meetings as invited

Qualifications:

 

 

Successful Candidate Profile

 

5+ years successfully leading a nonprofit or comparable management

5+ experience

Proven fundraiser, grant writer, and cultivator of individual/corporate gifts Compelling communicator and successful community/relationship builder Possesses an entrepreneurial spirit and an ability to accomplish great things with limited means Strategic thinker, great communicator, decisive operator, inspiring leader, and has a willingness to execute tactical plans as necessary Confident and comfortable working with an active Board of Directors Knowledge of experiential environmental education is highly desired Key personal qualities:

 

Personal resonance with the Land’s Sake mission Able to work as a member of a team of strong leaders at Land’s Sake, with an appreciation for achieving balance between organization-wide and programmatic goals Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and individual humility, ability to hear feedback, and to stay strong in one’s convictions yet be open to changing her/ his perspective Demonstrates courage to challenge the status quo when needed, while also demonstrating the strength needed to resist external pressures Is collegial, friendly, kind, hard-working, and humorous
