New Brunswick Community Farmers Market: Community Garden Coordinator

The New Brunswick Community Farmers Market is seeking a Community Garden Coordinator for the 2015 season. This position will run from April to September. Start and end dates are flexible for Rutgers students. This position is open to the public.

 About the market- The New Brunswick Community Farmers’ Market supports the development of a sustainable community by bringing healthy food from local farms to families and households across the city. Our mission is to ensure that all members of our community have access to healthy food. We strive to create healthy habits that last a lifetime, and to nourish New Brunswick from the ground up.

 Hours and Pay- This position pays $15/hour and is part-time at 20-25 hours per week. Other benefits include a flexible work schedule, and the opportunity to devote a portion of paid work hours toward a professional development project of your choosing (TBD in consultation with the market manager).

 Work days – flexible, Thurs & Saturday required

 Description –

  • Serve as Community Garden Coordinator Maintain (weeding, watering) display gardens; Recruit volunteers for larger garden projects; Help maintain garden cleanliness and shared spaces (i.e. shed, greenhouse, landscaping); Maintain list of garden responsibilities for community to help (English and Spanish).Keep open line of communication with community gardeners (Spanish language necessary); Keep list of gardener requests and issues for Market manager; Serve as coordinator for work days (Saturdays) and special projects with volunteer assistance. Assist with greenhouse management and donations of excess produce to emergency food providers.
  • Participate in New Brunswick Community Garden Coalition Attend Community Garden Coalition meetings; Help facilitate and prepare for community workshops; invite gardeners to Garden Coalition events; translate materials and help build a gardening movement in New Brunswick.
  • Market the market! Help spread the word. Assist with outreach, promotional events as necessary. Submit weekly social media postings (i.e. Facebook and Twitter), content and event ideas (i.e. blogs) from the gardens. Provide assistance with market operations if necessary (not typically required).

 Requirements –

Driver’s license required. You must be able to provide documentation proving that you are eligible to work in the United States.

 The Community Garden Coordinator should-

  • Have a genuine interest in working with a diverse group of students and residents
  • Be excited about engaging new volunteers and community gardeners
  • Be interested in gardening practices and techniques
  • Want to work outdoors! Be willing to perform physical labor related to gardening and assist with minor repairs; as well as general upkeep and appearance of the gardens
  • Be a self-starter and able to work independently
  • Be comfortable leading volunteers and work groups, with market staff support
  • Balance a leadership role with deep respect for a diversity of backgrounds and experiences
  • Be willing and able to resolve challenges or conflicts if they arise
  • Be organized- s/he will be required to keep and submit basic records and communicate regularly with the market manager
  • Be able to speak and write in both English and Spanish- fluency preferred, but not required
