The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition is seeking qualified candidates to serve with the organization as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. The New River Gorge Foodshed VISTA will work closely with Coalition staff on foodshed development projects in the New River Gorge region of West Virginia (Raleigh, Summers, Fayette, and Nicholas Counties). The VISTA will work with community members and local food and farm businesses and organizations in the region to assess the strengths and needs of the local food system in the region and help communities plan projects that address these needs. This is a great entry-level opportunity for someone who wants to start a career in community and economic development, helping farmers and food businesses, building local food systems, or improving access to healthy local food. Tasks will include:
Development and coordination of a team of community members, local, county, and state agency representatives, business owners, and other local food advocates.
Facilitation of meetings and foodshed assessment and planning processes
Use of print and social media to conduct outreach
Grant writing and development of reports
The Successful Applicant: must have excellent interpersonal and writing skills, strong initiative, attention to detail, a passion for food and agriculture issues, and a willingness to be flexible and learn by doing. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Individuals with backgrounds in economics, community development, rural development, agriculture, human nutrition, or law and policy are encouraged to apply. Familiarity with West Virginia is also a plus.
Start date: Mid July after attending VISTA Pre-Service Orientation.
Professional Development: This position requires skills and knowledge that a candidate may need to develop. The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition is committed to providing opportunities to develop those skills through professional mentorships/coaches, conference attendance, and summer institutes.
AmeriCorps VISTA: This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position and requires a one year commitment to the position. Information about the AmeriCorps VISTA program, living stipend, education award, and other benefits can be found at nationalservice.gov.
