Greenmarket Organization Information:
Greenmarket is a program of GrowNYC, a NYC-based non-profit organization. The mission of Greenmarket is to promote regional agriculture and ensure a continuing supply of fresh local produce for all New Yorkers. Greenmarket supports farmers and preserves farmland for the future by providing regional, small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products to New Yorkers.
Position Description for Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps Summer Associate:
GrowNYC’s Greenmarket program in partnership with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger is seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate to assist in operating Greenmarket’s SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) in farmers market project in 3 to 4 weekly Greenmarkets.
Greenmarket has established a national model for accepting SNAP in farmers markets, which has greatly expanded food access in New York City. In 2005 only three of our markets had the capacity to accept SNAP; in 2015, SNAP benefits could be used at 52 Greenmarkets, and sales exceeded $918,000. Additionally, SNAP has become a critical supplement to several markets’ survival as some farmers reported that SNAP sales comprise between 25-50% of their total income.
1. Increase revenue for Greenmarket farmers by increasing the use of
SNAP benefits in Greenmarkets.
2. Increase New Yorkers’ access to fresh produce, positively impacting
community and family wellness.
Americorps Goals and Activities:
• Conduct targeted community outreach to SNAP recipients and eligible
SNAP recipients in NYC, encouraging them to use SNAP to shop at farmers markets.
• Research CBOs, NGOs and government agencies and identify stakeholders
in market neighborhoods.
• Work to educate low income NYC residents about nutrition, seasonality,
buying locally and shopping at farmers markets.
• Assist in general market operations.
• Assist in general office tasks associated with project operations.
