Cookie notification

UNH websites use cookies to enhance the user experience, and new laws require websites to disclose this usage. The USNH privacy policy addresses cookie usage in full, and visitors must encounter a pop-up notification about UNH website cookie usage that contains a link to the USNH privacy policy upon arriving at any unh.edu site.

Purpose and audience

The purpose of notifying users about website cookie usage is to comply with various national and global laws governing privacy, including, but not limited to, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as some 3rd party vendor requirements. The audience is all visitors to all unh.edu websites.

Notification software

UNH Web and Mobile Development (WMD) is responsible for managing the cookie pop-up notification on unh.edu Drupal sites set up by WMD. All other UNH sites are responsible for managing this notification themselves.

Description

The first time a visitor views a Drupal unh.edu website supported by WMD, a cookie pop-up will present visitors with the following message:

Example of cookie pop-up window

A link will be provided to the USNH privacy policy. If a user clicks to accept the message, the pop-up will not appear again in that browser for that user on any WMD Drupal unh.edu website.

If a site is not a WMD Drupal unh.edu site, then the site must be programmed to display that pop-up notification to any first-time visitor to the site. The appearance and language should match what is used on the Drupal sites, with a link to the privacy policy. For more information, please contact WMD.

Third party software

Some websites use third-party software to provide additional services, such as ecommerce or appointment scheduling. If a third-party software requires its own separate cookie policy notification, that notification should be customized to use the approved UNH digital palette, and it should link to a cookie usage statement on the vendor’s website, not on the UNH website. If the USNH privacy policy covers the usage of the vendor’s software, then the standard UNH cookie pop-up described above should be used.

Support

For support for WMD Drupal sites, please contact WMD. For other sites, WMD may be able to assist you in implementing the pop-up.

Responsibility for Usage

All site owners of non-WMD Drupal sites are responsible for implementing the pop-ups on their sites.

Violations

If inappropriate or inaccurate cookie notification is discovered, UNH WMD will contact the account user to discuss the issue. If the account owner cannot be contacted or is no longer at UNH, that cookie pop-up will be administered by WMD and can be removed or corrected if deemed inaccurate or inappropriate. When usage is obviously unacceptable, UNH WMD will immediately remove or correct the pop-up prior to contacting the account owner. Reports regarding inappropriate notification may be sent to WMD.
