BCoE Creates Internet Safety Checklist
The University of New Hampshire Broadband Center of Excellence (BCoE) has created a checklist for individuals to use in assessing their vulnerability to threats originating from their use of the Internet wherever they are linked – home or public place.
“At a time when hackers create chaos and are able to gain remote control of automated cars or in-home baby monitors, it is incumbent for us all to take responsibility for Internet safety and not passively trust governments, organizations and service providers to do it for us,” said BCoE Executive... The University of New Hampshire’s Broadband Center of Excellence (BCoE) wishes our readers and contributors a very merry Christmas and happy and prosperous New Year. We conclude the year on an encouraging high note for TV White Space (TVWS) which has gained some momentum since mid-year. We continue to believe this technology, with support from large corporations, could represent the best chance for deploying universally available broadband. But lots more work needs to be done on development, standardization and ultimately creation of affordable hardware.

Hello,
I am not surprised by the news last month that the FCC will do away with net neutrality at a meeting in mid-December, giving incumbent ISPs such as telcos and cable operators a nice Christmas present for this year. Rather than a gift, it seems to me like its coal in the stocking for up-and-coming entrepreneurs and businesses who may lack the clout to potentially have to buy their way into what could become the next pay-per-play communications environment. We have a brief report on the anticipated vote below, with a link to some extensive BCoE work we reported on in July.

Myth or Reality of Municipal Broadband Network!
Ther has been more discussion of hte validity, or lack thereof, of municipalities building broadband networks by our communities across the USA. More towns and local governments appear to be studying such endeavors as they see the economic and social value that is supported by more ubiquitous and affordable Internet access.
