LTC Jake Johnston grew up in Davison, Michigan, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2001.  Upon graduation, LTC Johnston commissioned as an Aviation Officer and attended Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama.  He earned his rating as an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Pilot and then served as an Air Cavalry Platoon Leader and Squadron Adjutant/S1 in 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, in Buedingen, Germany, and Baghdad, Iraq, as part of 1st Armored Division.  Following the Aviation Captains Career Course, LTC Johnston served as the Personnel Officer (S1), Troop Commander, and Aviation Brigade Battle Captain as part of 1st Squadron, 6th  Cavalry Regiment, in Fort Carson, Colorado, and Tikrit, Iraq.  He then earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point, where he taught economics and finance courses.  After graduating from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, LTC Johnston served as the Squadron Operations Officer and Executive Officer for 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment in Hawaii and the Republic of Korea.  Prior to his assignment as the Professor of Military Science at the University of New Hampshire, LTC Johnston served as the Executive Officer for the Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific in Hawaii.

LTC Johnston’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Air Medal (4 x Awards) Meritorious Service Medal (2 x Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (2 x Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, the Senior Aviator and Parachutist Badges.
