Introduction
The University of New Hampshire at Manchester was established in 1985 as the sixth college of the University of New Hampshire. As the urban campus of the University of New Hampshire, UNH Manchester provides access to public higher education for people who live and work in the greater Merrimack Valley.
Located in the heart of the I-93 corridor, UNH Manchester is a vital part of the educational, economic, and cultural life of central and southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. The college serves the needs of a diverse urban population and brings the resources of the state’s flagship university to the urban center. UNH Manchester is committed to the economic growth and welfare of the region, encouraging students to connect their work in the University with their lives in their communities.
UNH Manchester
• Offers selected liberal arts and professional degree programs at the associate and baccalaureate levels and makes available graduate programs offered by UNH Durham;
• Emphasizes programs that address urban issues and focus on civic and community engagement;
• Serves a wide variety of students: full-time and part-time, traditional and non-traditional and other students with diverse interests, backgrounds, and goals;
• Actively strives to identify, recruit, and retain students, faculty, and staff from under-represented groups;
• Has a vibrant internship program;
• Maintains a small student/faculty ratio; and
• Encourages and supports research and scholarship by the entire UNH Manchester community.
The college is founded on a strong liberal arts base and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and scholarship. In addition to its own offerings, programs from UNH Durham enrich its academic core. UNH Manchester values institutional collaboration and has fostered articulation agreements with area colleges and other USNH institutions.
UNH Manchester also provides transfer programs for students who wish to begin their undergraduate education at UNH Manchester and complete their degree requirements at the University of New Hampshire in Durham or at other academic institutions.

UNH Manchester is within a thirty minute drive of half the state’s population. Because the Merrimack Valley is constantly changing, we continually assess our curriculum, develop new programs, and move in step with the University of New Hampshire in Durham, of which we are a part, as well as the other University System of New Hampshire institutions.
Location
UNH Manchester’s central location and day, evening, and Saturday class schedules make it possible for students to earn their degree or to take professional development or continuing education classes while fulfilling other commitments. Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire and a rapidly developing recreational, financial, and business center. Students at UNH Manchester find an educational resource in the city itself, with its concerts, festivals, theater productions, and art and historical exhibitions, and a wide variety of internship opportunities. Many students live and work in Manchester or nearby cities and towns. Boston, New Hampshire’s White Mountains and the New Hampshire seacoast are all within an hour’s drive from campus.
Campus
The University Center, located in Manchester’s historic mill yard, is a fitting setting for the University’s urban college. The 75,000 square foot facility, formerly the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company’s machine shop, was built in 1890. The expansion to the fourth floor of 286 Commercial Street and expansion plans to support new programs in science technology and business symbolize the growth of UNH Manchester and the revitalization of the city’s downtown area. Area residents have access to university resources. The college community is engaged beyond the classrooms in the Merrimack Valley region through internships and outreach scholarship. UNH Manchester is conveniently located and easily accessible by major highways and city bus service that is free for our students. There is student parking near the building in Arms Park lot and on Commercial Street.
Accreditation
UNH Manchester is a college of the University of New Hampshire. The University of New Hampshire is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., which accredits schools and colleges in the six New England states. Accreditation by the association indicates that the institution has been carefully reviewed and found to meet or exceed standards agreed upon by nationally recognized educators.
Faculty
The UNH Manchester faculty is its greatest asset. A core of residential faculty members enjoy a reputation for excellent teaching, scholarly achievement in their fields, and service to the community. They are recognized scholars and have acquired national and international reputations. Most importantly, UNH Manchester’s dedicated faculty members are outstanding teachers who care about each individual student. Faculty members work closely with students as advisors and help students define their goals, plan career objectives, and develop an individualized program of study within each major.
Student Profile
Each semester, approximately 1,400 degree and continuing education students attend UNH Manchester. The student population is composed of a unique mix of traditional college-age students (18-23 years old) and older adults and reflects the region’s diverse ethnicity. UNH Manchester’s small classes encourage interaction between faculty and students and foster educational excellence. Students at UNH Manchester find a place to grow, a place to explore, and a place to enrich their lives.
