DESIGNING A WRITING INTENSIVE COURSE
A WORKSHOP FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED TEACHERS
- How might I organize a WI course differently from a non-WI course?
- How do I build an assignment sequence that accounts for revision and feedback?
- How can I communicate expectations for my WI course to my students?
In this workshop, faculty will have an opportunity to address these questions as they develop courses that integrate effective ways of teaching with writing. Participants will share the ways they have articulated Writing Intensive course guidelines in their course materials. They will then discuss course design and collaborate on their own course sequences. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a substantial draft or revision of their WI course syllabus. In the process, they will gain a broader understanding of how to use writing in their classrooms.
The workshop is limited to 25 participants, so registration is required. To register, please contact Mike Garcia, Assistant Director of the University Writing Programs, at mike.garcia@unh.edu.

The University Writing Program provides several workshops each semester for faculty in all disciplines. Grounded in current writing theory and research, workshops address various topics and provide participants with strategies that can make writing instruction more effective and more efficient. Each workshop serves as a forum for faculty to swap ideas, learn new strategies and hone teaching practices. Recent workshops have dealt with a range of topics from assignment design to assessing writing to integrating peer review.
In addition to these topical workshops, the Writing Program also facilitates workshops for specific departments or programs on an as-needed basis. Such workshops can better address the conventions and values of writing appropriate to a given discipline. These workshops must be requested by a department and are available on very a limited basis.
