Proposing a Writing Intensive course

Departments and faculty interested in having a course designated as WI need to complete a WI Course Proposal. Ideally, WI proposals are approved during the semester before the course is offered. The deadline for submitting fall course proposals is April 1; the deadline for Spring courses is October 1.

Proposing a course consists of the following steps:

1. Determine which WI Course Proposal form you need. There are two forms:

  • GenEd Course Form [PDF]. Courses in the General Education curriculum follow the GenEd course proposal form. These proposals will be forwarded to the General Education Committee for review and approval. The committee will decide to designate the course as WI or seek additional information.
  • Non-GenEd Course Form [PDF]. Courses that are not part of the General Education requirement follow the non-GenEd course proposal form. These proposals will be reviewed by members of the University Writing Committee. The committee will decide to designate the course as WI or seek additional information.

2. Complete the form.

After filling out the course information at the top of the form, discuss how your course will implement each of the guidelines. The bulleted points following each of the guidelines should help you complete the proposal.

If at any point you would like to talk with someone about your course, please contact Jeff Ringer, associate director of the University Writing Programs, at (603) 862-3209 or at jeff.ringer@unh.edu.

3. Attach the form to the course syllabus.

The syllabus should include the instructor's name, the first semester the course will be offered, course requirements, content, organization, and required reading and writing assignments. It should also identify the course as WI and briefly describe the features of the course that make it writing intensive.

4. Submit two copies of the form and syllabus.

Direct these packets to Ed Mueller, University Writing Program, 7 Hamilton Smith Hall, Durham, New Hampshire, 03824.

5. Await notification.

The faculty member and department chair (and department advisor where applicable) will be notified via e-mail or formal letter of the appropriate committee’s decision.

Once a course is designated as WI, the course will be listed on the Registrar's website. The University Writing Program will keep a copy of the syllabus on file in 7 Hamilton Smith Hall.
