What is Race, Culture, and Power?

After the startling events of the 1994 Los Angeles Race Riots, professors at the University of New Hampshire proposed a new minor that would examine the impact of race in American society. Reaching across academic disciplines, professors from English, History, and Political Science, among others, established the minor: Race, Culture, and Power.

For over a decade, Race, Culture, and Power has asked the questions: what is Race? Is Race a social construction? How does Race inform our understanding of society? Simultaneously timely and timeless, the Race, Culture, and Power minor prepares students to be informed and engaged citizens of the 21st century.

Requirements

The Race, Culture, and Power minor consists of five courses. To complete a minor, students are required to enroll in INCO 450, the introductory course, and they must enroll in at least one approved elective at the 600/700-level. Students must earn a C- or better in each course, and must maintain a 2.0 grad-point average in courses taken for the minor.

Electives are approved by the coordinator and announced each semester in the Time and Room Schedule. Ordinarily, no more than two electives may be taken from the same academic department. A relevant internship may be substituted for one of the electives. Students should consult with Professor Burt Feintuch (burt.feintuch@unh.edu).
