What Is the Queer Studies Minor?
The QSM consists of a cluster of five courses with an interdisciplinary focus on Queer Studies. The QSM is intended to enrich and complement your other academic studies. Queer Studies can transform the way you see the world. It can open up possibilities that you might never have imagined. Your coursework will not only require you to research and read, answer test questions and write papers, it will require you to challenge the status quo, including your own assumptions.
The spirit of inquiry and engagement is at the heart of Queer Studies.
Formerly an emphasis, Queer Studies is now offered as a minor at UNH. Queer Studies is not currently offered as a major at UNH. The Queer Studies Minor can now appear on your transcript.
The Queer Studies Minor is housed in the Women's Studies office and supported institutionally by the Women's Studies Program, but you do not have to be a Women's Studies major or minor to pursue a QSM. You can combine a QSM with any major or minor offered by the University.
How can I complete a minor in Queer Studies?
You can earn a QSM in several ways:
Take a class that is registered as qualifying for the QSM.
In courses with a high degree of self-directed study, choose a research topic in queer studies. With approval from your professor and the QSM advisor, these courses can count towards your QSM.
Design an independent study! If you have an interest in queer studies that isn't being addressed in existing courses, consider designing your own! Many QSM faculty are willing to supervise student independent study. Explore homosexuality in film, queer political organizing, ...it's up to you.
Going on NSE? Studying Abroad?
Consider going to a university that offers queer studies courses! Many universities here and abroad boast comprehensive programs in queer studies. Any coursework taken at another institution must be approved by your QSM advisor to qualify.
What can I do with a minor in Queer Studies?
The QSM can afford you the opportunity to develop cultural competencies in working with lesbian, transgender, gay and bisexual people.
If your career path is leading into education, counseling, social services, government, health or law, QS will help you improve your ability to work effectively with LGBTQ+ people.
Businesses also need managers and leaders who can work effectively with different kinds of people, and who appreciate diversity as an asset and not a liability!
