Queer Studies Emphsis Now Offered

The UNH Women’s Studies Program is pleased to be offering a new Queer Studies Emphasis. The emphasis consists of a cluster of five courses with an interdisciplinary focus on Queer Studies. It is intended to enrich and complement other academic studies and offers students the opportunity to develop cultural competencies in working with lesbian, transgender, gay, and bisexual people.

Under the leadership of Professor Marla Brettschneider, Women’s Studies and Political Science, the Queer Studies Emphasis is becoming a popular way to expand one’s knowledge and understand another aspect of diversity. You may ask, “ What is Queer Studies?” Queer Studies is a rapidly growing field that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, their history, and culture. It is also a method of inquiry that explores the role of same-sex desire across and among cultures and histories. Queer Studies grew out of feminist scholarship into a distinct fi eld of inquiry and considers sexualities and genders as identities, social statuses, categories of knowledge, and as lenses that help us to frame how we understand our world. Queer Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing upon cultural and social history, theory, sociology, psychology, theater, anthropology, law and political science, among other fields.
