Welcome to the
Center for New England Culture
The Center for New England Culture promotes understanding of the region's diverse culture and rich history, and
it fosters an appreciation of the value of regional culture in contemporary American life. Established in 2002
as a unit of the University of New Hampshire's Center for the Humanities, CNEC sponsors core activities:
- Research, including scholarly conferences, a research fellowship, seminars, and field work
- Documentation and preservation of cultural and historical resources, covering the region’s past
as well as contemporary, everyday life in old and new communities;
- Outreach, through conferences, lectures series, publications, and the Internet
- Education, kindergarten through the graduate level, including teachers institutes, college
and university curriculum development
- Collaboration, through a network of relationships and joint projects
- Civic Renewal, through research and conversation on the political, social, economic, and spiritual
diversity of New England
Professor David H. Watters serves as the Director of the Center for New England Culture. The Center was
established with the assistance of a planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and it
is part of a consortium of regional culture centers. The Center is funded by the University of New Hampshire,
grants, and private donations.
