Historic Artifacts

from the collection of Kenneth Hamilton

9413
Front: Lead "fetish" and slag from casting (possibly bullets), 17th century Northern Massachusetts or New Hampshire, Merrimac River area
Back: French gun lock, before ca. 1694, Castine, Maine
This type of lock was outdated by 1697, by virtue of the third screw in the tail, and can be seen in the Hannah Dustin gun. (See illustration on wall.) These slender French dogs or cocks often broke, as can be seen in the several broken ones in the collections of the Maine State Museum.
