The University of New Hampshire is issuing this campus alert (in compliance with the Clery Act). The Clery Act is federal legislation that requires all colleges and universities with federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about campus crimes

 

SAFETY INFORMATION 02/07/10

On February 7th, 2010 at approximately 5:15 p.m., the University of New Hampshire Police Department responded to a report of male subject having exposed himself to female students in the area between Mills Hall and Fairchild Hall.  The male subject is described as Caucasian, approximately 5’8”, wearing light blue jeans, a blue sweatshirt with possibly a PENN State logo depicted on it, and a baseball hat.  The male subject exposed himself, but did not say anything or make any attempt to contact the females.  He was last seen in the area of Alexander Hall and Hetzel Hall.  The University of New Hampshire Police Department reminds everyone in the Community to please contact the University Police immediately upon observing anyone or anything of concern at 603-862-1427 or 911 if you need immediate assistance.

SAFETY INFORMATION 12/08/09

On Dec. 8, 2009 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the University of New Hampshire Police Department received a call from a UNH bus driver reporting a man showing a silver handgun near Holloway Commons. No threats were made. UNH Police did an extensive search of the campus and feel that there is no current danger.

Police will maintain an enhanced presence on campus throughout the night to alleviate concerns. Campus security is available to escort students between buildings 24 hours a day by calling (603) 862-1427. This free service is available any time. Please call 911 to report any suspicious activity.

 

SAFETY ALERT 12/05/09

On Saturday Dec. 5, between the hours of  12:30 and 1 a.m. a female UNH student reported being grabbed from behind as she entered her room on the 7th floor of Stoke Hall.  The assailant is an unknown male with short hair who allegedly threw her on a bed in an attempt to assault her.  The victim reportedly fought off her attacker who then ran from the room. She did not require medical attention.

No similar incidents have been reported to the University of New Hampshire Police Department at this time.  Everyone in the Campus Community is urged to call 911 immediately upon observing anyone or anything suspicious. SAFETY INFORMATION 12/04/09

The UNH Police Department received information at approximately 6:15 p.m. this evening of a suspicious male subject with short hair wearing khaki pants and a leather jacket with a fur-type collar with what appeared to be the handle of a firearm protruding from one of his jacket pockets.  The subject was last seen in the area of Edgewood Road and Main Street walking towards the downtown area of Durham.  Please contact 911 immediately to report any suspicious activity.  Any updates will be posted on www.unh.edu/upd.

UPDATE

At 7:55 p.m. this evening the UNH Police Department received information of a male subject fitting the above description.  Information regarding the location of the subject was provided to the UNH Police Emergency Dispatch Center approximately 10 minutes after the Emergency ALERT was sent out by a witness who had received the Emergency ALERT.

The Durham Police Department was able to detain and identify this subject in the downtown area of Main Street.  The UNH Police Department was on scene with the identification of this subject.  This alert is cancelled.

 

SAFETY INFORMATION 11/10/09

The University of New Hampshire Police Department would like to make the members of our community aware of several thefts from University buildings which have taken place over the past couple of weeks.  Specifically, these thefts have consisted of purses and/or wallets left in office areas resulting in credit cards being stolen and fraudulent charges being applied to them.  The buildings directly affected by these thefts have been Conant Hall, Morse Hall,  Murkland Hall, and Spaulding Hall/Life Science Center.   

We ask our community members to contact the University Police Department IMMEDIATELY if you observe anyone suspicious around or inside any University building.  Please remember to take your personal affects with you, and to lock your car and office doors at all times.  If anyone has any information regarding these thefts or believed they may have observed something the University Police should be aware of, please do not hesitate to contact us at 603-862-1427 or anonymously at http://www.unh.edu/upd/Contact-Us.html.

 

SAFETY INFORMATION 11/05/09

On November 5, 2009, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the University of New Hampshire Police Department received a report of an unknown male in Alexander Hall attempting to view a female as she was showering.  The unknown male is described as:

25-27 years of age

White male (darker skin)

5’7” slim build

Short dark brown hair

One crocked front tooth

Wearing a black zip up jacket

with light blue track jacket underneath

       Blue jeans, sneakers with white bottoms

Upon being noticed in the bathroom by the female party, he immediately left and did not confront the female.  No similar incidents have been reported to the University of New Hampshire Police Department at this time. We remind everyone in our Campus Community to please  CALL  911  IMMEDIATELY upon observing anyone or anything suspicious. SAFETY ALERT 10/31/09

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the assault of a male University of New Hampshire student outside Sawyer Hall on the Ballard Street side at approximately 11:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, to contact police immediately at (603) 862-1427. The victim was transferred to the hospital by ambulance but has since been released.

A witness to the assault told us she observed multiple people walk past the assault while it was in progress," said University Police Chief Nicholas Halias. "We are confident someone will step forward and assist us in finding the perpetrators of this violent assault. Many students were in the area at the time celebrating Halloween and their help will be important to solving this crime against a fellow Wildcat.

The 21-year-old victim suffered significant facial injuries as well as to his upper torso. He was allegedly attacked by three men, one described as wearing a yellowish Halloween costume in the shape of a banana or hot dog. The other two males were wearing dark colored hoodies. The attack occurred between Sawyer and Stoke halls on a grassy area off Ballard Street.

University Police remind everyone in the campus community to call 911 immediately upon observing anyone or anything suspicious. Anyone with information about this incident should contact police at (603) 862-1427.

UPDATED 12/21/2009

The UNH Police Department arrested a 21-year-old Hudson man for the above Halloween assault of a University of New Hampshire student. The University Police Department arrested Eric A. Hunt (DOB 10-17-88) of 5 Bruce Street, Hudson, on one felony charge of second degree assault, as well as one felony count of tampering with witnesses and informants. Hunt is not a UNH student. He turned himself into police today and was released on $20,000 personal recognizance bail. He is scheduled to appear in Dover District Court Feb. 11, 2010, at 8:30 a.m.

This arrest was the result of a lengthy investigation by the University Police Department, with assistance from the Hudson, Manchester, Nashua, and Tilton police departments, as well as the Strafford County Attorney’s Office. The arrest of Hunt is the direct result of anonymous information provided to police, as well as a cooperative effort among law enforcement agencies.  

 

SAFETY INFORMATION 10/19/09

 On October 19, 2009 at approximately 7:00 pm., the University of New Hampshire Police Department received a report of a male subject in his mid 20’s in the third floor woman’s bathroom of Hetzel Hall looking under the shower door and watching a woman taking a shower. The male subject quickly left the bathroom when discovered.  This was the extent of their interaction as reported to the UNH Police Department at this time.  The unknown male is described as:

White male

Crew cut dark hair

Broad shoulders

Black T-shirt

 No similar incidents have been reported to the University of New Hampshire Police Department at this time. SAFETY ALERT 10/11/09

On Sunday evening October 11, 2009  at approximately 11:30 pm a male University of New Hampshire student reported being physically assaulted and robbed on the stairs between the New England Center Hotel and Conference Center and the woods by three unknown males. The males are described as:

• One male wearing a light colored sweatshirt with Hood
• Two males wearing dark colored sweatshirts with Hoods

No similar incidents have been reported to the University of New Hampshire Police Department at this time.

The UNH Police Department urges anyone who believes they or a friend have been the victim of a assault to immediately contact their local law enforcement agency. On- campus, the UNH Police can be reached at 862-1427.

SAFETY ALERT 09/27/09

On Sunday morning September 27, 2009 between midnight and 1: 00 am a female student reported being sexually assaulted in an unknown on-campus dormitory by an unknown male. The male is described as:

  • White
  • Between 18 and 20 years of age
  • Approximately 5'10
  • Approximately 160 lbs
  • Slim build
  • Clean shaven
  • Navy blue baseball cap
  • Short hair
  • Unknown color button down shirt
  • Blue jeans

No similar incidents have been reported to the University of New Hampshire Police Department at this time.

Update Oct 8, 2009

After further and thorough investigation of the above incident, the University Police Department has determined that there is not sufficient evidence to believe that the circumstances reported on September 27th present an immediate risk to the UNH community or are part of a larger pattern of crime on campus by an individual assailant.

 

SAFETY ALERT 09/06/09

Early Sunday morning (September 6th, 2009) at approximately 12:45 a.m., the University of New Hampshire Police Department issued a campus-wide alert early yesterday morning at about 1:20 a.m., after a man injured a male student in an unprovoked attack.  The attacker was just outside Stoke Hall when he punched the student in the head and face.  According to reports regarding the incident, the suspect, who was accompanied by another man, did not say anything before attacking the student.

Witnesses reported the suspect was a white male about 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall with black hair, and was wearing a yellow and light-colored shirt.  Witnesses were not able to provide a description of the other male subject seen with the suspect.  At this time, the Police Department has not identified the suspect or his friend.
