Sexual Abstinence in Young Adults
Opposing interest groups currently debate whether young adults should be taught the norm of sexual abstinence prior to marriage. However, there is some disagreement over the definitional boundaries of the term sexual abstinence? (Office of the Independent Counsel 1998). The question of how young adults define what constitutes sexual behavior is crucial to our understanding of the debate over abstinence. A review of the literature indicates that there has been only limited empirical research into specifically how young adults define sexual abstinence. Jean Elson and her students have undertaken a quantitative/qualitative study of abstinence among young adults.
